Paul Soames (John Cusack), agente secreto americano que investiga o assassinato de seu melhor amigo, acaba se envolvendo em uma rede de conspiração e mentiras. Com a ajuda do oficial de inteligência japonesa Tanaka (Ken Watanabe), Paul concentra a sua investigação no carismático gângster da cidade Anthony Lanting (Chow Yun-Fat) e sua bela esposa Anna (Gong Li). Logo, Paul e Anna se envolvem e colocam tudo o que possuem em jogo, inclusive suas vidas. Apenas a investigação revelará que a verdade esconde vários segredos.

Paul Soames (John Cusack), American secret agent who investigates the murder of his best friend, gets involved in a web of conspiracy and lies. With the help of Japanese intelligence officer Tanaka (Ken Watanabe), Paul focuses his research on charismatic gangster city Anthony Lanting (Chow Yun-Fat) and his beautiful wife Anna (Gong Li).
