Seis histórias que, apesar de ocorrerem em épocas e países distintos, possuem uma interligação. No século XIX, Adam Ewing (Jim Sturgees) é um advogado enviado pela família para negociar a comprar de novos escravos. Ao retornar para casa, ele salva um escravo, Autua (David Gyasi), que está fugindo de Henry Goose (Tom Hanks), um médico que o envenenou.

Em 1930, o jovem e talentoso compositor Robert Frobisher (Ben Whishaw) ajuda o também compositor, e já idoso, Vyvyan Ars (Jim Broadbent). Durante o trabalho, Robert encontra uma crônica escrita por Ewing em um jornal em meio aos livros de Ars.

Em 1970, a jornalista Luisa Rey (Halle Berry) conhece Rufus Sixmith (James d'Arcy) quando o elevador em que ambos estão quebra. Tempos depois, ele a procura para revelar que estão encobrindo uma série de falhas no projeto de construção de um reator nuclear.

Nos dias atuais, Timothy Cavendish (Jim Broadbent) é dono de uma pequena editora, que lançou um livro que dificilmente dará retorno financeiro. Entretanto, a situação muda quando o autor do livro mata um de seus críticos, tornando-se uma celebridade instantânea.

Coreia do Sul (agora chamada de Nova Seul), futuro. Sonmi-451 (Donna Bae) é um clone que trabalha em um restaurante fast food. Ela foi programada para realizar todo dia as mesmas tarefas, sem manifestar qualquer reclamação, mas a situação muda quando outro clone acaba, sem querer, despertando-a sobre sua existência.

Futuro. Nova Seul foi tragada pelas águas há 100 anos, o que fez com que o local viva uma realidade pós-apocalíptica. Nesta época vive Zachry (Tom Hanks), o líder de uma tribo que venera Sonmi como se fosse uma deusa. Sua vida muda quando Meronym (Halle Berry), que integra um grupo evoluído chamado Prescients, lhe pede para viver com sua tribo.

Six stories, although they occur at different times in different countries, have an interconnection. In the nineteenth century, Adam Ewing (Jim Sturgees) is a lawyer sent by the family to negotiate the purchase of new slaves. Upon returning home, he saves a slave Autua (David Gyasi), who is fleeing from Henry Goose (Tom Hanks), a doctor who poisoned him.

In 1930, the young and talented composer Robert Frobisher (Ben Whishaw) also helps the composer, and an elderly, Vyvyan Ars (Jim Broadbent). During the work, Robert is a chronicle written by Ewing in a newspaper among the books of Ars.

In 1970, journalist Luisa Rey (Halle Berry) knows Rufus Sixmith (James D'Arcy) when the elevator in that both are broken. Later, he seeks to prove that they are covering up a series of failures in the project of building a nuclear reactor.

Future. New Seoul was swallowed up by the waters 100 years ago, which has made the site live a post-apocalyptic reality. At this time lives Zachry (Tom Hanks), the leader of a tribe that worships Sonmi like a goddess. His life changes when Meronym (Halle Berry), which integrates a group called Prescients evolved, asks him to live with his tribe.
